Nach Operation und Narkose können die Patienten in den Aufwachraum verlegt werden, wenn sie suffizient spontan atmen und die Kreislaufverhältnisse stabil sind. Mit den modernen volatilen und intravenösen Anästhetika sind die Aufwachzeiten kurz, deshalb ist eine präventive Analgesie mit lokal- oder regionalanästhesiologischen Verfahren, Opioiden oder Nichtopioidanalgetika besonders wichtig. Weil respiratorische und hämodynamische Komplikationen vor allem in der frühen postoperativen Phase entstehen, muss eine gute postoperative Überwachung auch nach kleineren operativen oder diagnostischen Eingriffen sichergestellt sein. An den Schnittstellen Operationssaal — Aufwachraum — Kinderstation muss ein guter Informationsfluss über relevante Vorerkrankungen, Besonderheiten der Operation oder mögliche postoperative Probleme bestehen.
