Trotz aller Fortschritte der Intensivmedizin garantieren diese im Einzelfall nicht das Überleben. In Grenzsituationen ist zu entscheiden, ob man eine Behandlung maximieren, d. h. alle intensivmedizinischen Therapiemaßnahmen ausschöpfen soll, oder ob man die Therapie besser begrenzt, d. h. eine Steigerung der durchgeführten Behandlungsmaßnahmen vermeidet und keine neuen Therapien ansetzt.
