Ein schwerer akuter Hirnschaden kann zu verschiedenen klinischen Daseinsformen führen, welche den Hirntod, das Koma, vegetative (VS), minimal bewusste (MCS) oder Locked-in (LIS)-Zustände umfassen. Einige dieser Zustände sind irreversibel, andere vorübergehend. Im Folgenden sollen die nosologischen Definitionen dieser klinischen Entitäten und ihre klinische Bewertung dargestellt werden. Daneben soll die Notwendigkeit zusätzlicher Untersuchungen wie Elektroenzephalographie (EEG) und funktionelles »neuroimaging« zur Objektivierung der Diagnose und Beurteilung der Prognose aufgezeigt werden.
