Die zerebrale Durchblutung des Feten ist in vielen Fällen von Interesse, weil dadurch physiologische Abläufe, Veränderungen im Sinne von adaptiven Regulationsmechanismen und natürlich auch Zeichen ablaufender Pathologie beobachtet werden können. Die Dopplersonogramme der zerebralen Gefäße können fast immer mit gepulstem Doppier am besten unter Zuhilfenahme des Farbdopplers zuverlässig abgeleitet werden. In der Mehrzahl der Indikationen erfolgt die Analyse mittels Indexbestimmung, also durch qualitative Signalanalyse. Bei manchen Indikationen ist auch eine quantitative Analyse erforderlich. Maximalgeschwindigkeiten oder über einen Herzzyklus gemittelte Maximalgeschwindigkeiten können — etwa bei der Frage der Anämiediagnostik, der Blutgruppensensibilisierungen, aber auch in ausgewählten Fällen bei Wachstumsrestriktion und bei der Frage der Blutumverteilungdiagnostisch relevante Ergebnisse liefern.
