Die chemische Industrie sowie der Energiesektor (Atomenergie, Öl- und Gasindustrie) unterscheiden sich v.a. durch ihren Prozesscharakter von anderen Branchen: Eine Reaktion wird angestoßen, die sich ohne weiteres menschliches Zutun weiter fortsetzt und deren Verlauf lediglich überwacht wird. Dabei kann es verzögerte Effekte geben, die für Menschen schlecht einzuschätzen sind und die zu Übersteuerungen führen können, wie dies Dörner et al. anhand von Simulationen wie „Lohhausen“ darstellen konnten (Dörner et al., 1983).
