Anorexia nervosa, auch bekannt als Pubertätsmagersucht, wird charakterisiert durch das anhaltende Streben nach Gewichtsverlust durch absichtlich herbeigeführtes Abnehmen. Dieses wird von anorektischen Patientinnen durch strikte Reduktion der Kalorienaufnahme, exzessive körperliche Aktivität sowie in einigen Fällen auch durch Erbrechen oder den Missbrauch von Abführmitteln (Laxanzien) oder Entwässerungstabletten (Diuretika) erreicht. Das äußerlich auffallendste Merkmal ist der gravierende Gewichtsverlust, der häufig 50% des Ausgangsgewichtes überschreitet und bis zur lebensbedrohlichen Unterernährung gehen kann.
