Obwohl die Verwendung der Begriffe »Geschlecht« und »Gender« weit verbreitet ist, gilt es, ihre Bedeutung zu erklären. Der Begriff Geschlecht dient zur Klassifizierung von Lebewesen als entweder männlich oder weiblich, entsprechend ihrer Fortpflanzungsorgane und der Funktionen, die auf den entsprechenden Chromosomen basieren. Daher werden Personen mit zwei X-Chromosomen (XX) als weiblich, Individuen mit der Kombination von X- und Y-Chromosom (XY) dagegen als männlich angesehen.
