The Obstetric Care of the Pregnant Woman with Cancer

  • Chapter
Cancer and Pregnancy

Part of the book series: Recent Results in Cancer Research ((RECENTCANCER,volume 178))

Abstract

The care of the pregnant woman with cancer represents an immense challenge for doctors and other health professionals because of the complex ethical and therapeutic dilemmas raised. Appropriate and timely investigation and treatment may be lifesaving for the mother, but may have devastating effects on the developing fetus. Cancer occurs rarely in pregnancy, complicating approximately 1 in 1,000 live births. As women delay their first pregnancy to their third and fourth decades, the number of women suffering malignancy in pregnancy is expected to rise. Women with malignancy should be managed by a specialist multidisciplinary team including obstetricians, medical and surgical oncologists, radiologists, oncology nurses and midwives.
