In Bezug auf ihre Rentensysteme standen die Regierungen in einer Reihe westeuropäischer Gesellschaften in den 1990er-Jahren vor der Aufgabe, auf den strukturellen und kulturellen Wandel in den Geschlechter-Arrangements zu reagieren, in denen das vormals vorherrschende Familienmodell der Hausfrauenehe zunehmend von moderneren Leitbildern der Familie abgelöst wurde, die Frauen und Männern gleichermaßen einen Platz in der Erwerbsarbeit zuweisen. Das bedeutete vor allem auch, dass eine Restrukturierung von den auf Heirat basierenden hin zu individualisierten Formen der Sicherung notwendig wurde, in denen auch Erziehungszeiten berücksichtigt werden. In diesem Beitrag soll im Vergleich von Deutschland und Großbritannien untersucht werden, wie die Wohlfahrtsstaaten auf diese Anforderungen reagiert haben. Dabei fragen wir insbesondere danach, welche stratifizierenden Wirkungen das Rentensystem jeweils vor und nach den Reformen in Bezug auf das Geschlechterverhältnis hatte. Wir gehen davon aus, dass die Rentenreformen einerseits dadurch geprägt waren, dass es sich um zwei verschiedene Wohlfahrtsregime handelt und andererseits dadurch, dass es Ähnlichkeiten in Bezug auf das vorherrschende kulturelle Leitbild der Familie gibt. Auf dieser Basis untersuchen wir, inwieweit die unterschiedliche Regimezugehörigkeit zu divergenten Reformverläufen geführt hat bzw. inwieweit sich wegen der Ähnlichkeiten in den kulturellen Grundlagen der Geschlechter-Arrangements und deren Wandel die Rentensysteme nach den Umstrukturierungen eher ähneln. Wir legen dabei eine historische Perspektive zugrunde, in der vergleichend erfasst wird, wie sich die Rentensysteme in Bezug auf ihre Geschlechter-Dimension seit den 1950er-Jahren jeweils bis zum Beginn der Reformen am Ende der 1990er-Jahre entwickelt haben, und welche Veränderungen sie im Zuge der seitdem erfolgten Restrukturierung im Hinblick auf die Geschlechterdimension erfahren haben.
