Part-time employment in the Swedish retail trade: A gender perspective on the development of working time patterns

  • Chapter
Gender — from Costs to Benefits

Abstract

Part-time work is very much on the agenda in Sweden today, as the government has assigned 300 million SEK (=32.5 million euro) for a period of three years in order to reduce part-time unemployment (www.helaprojektet.com). In the Swedish context part-time work is, in other words, defined as something problematic and identified as an involuntary choice for many women - not necessarily because of family responsibilities but because part-time employment is the only thing offered.
