In addition to codes 1–9, other measurements may be required to characterize the ECG in population studies. Coding of the actual heart rate (apart from 8–7 and 8-8) may provide important predictive information. Continuous heart rate and frontal plane axis measurements also allow the computer to choose different cutoff points for defining certain arrhythmias. When exact amplitude measurements are made, less severe forms of cardiac hypertrophy can be followed than by sole use of 3-codes.
