Der Begriff Komorbidität besagt, dass bei einem Patienten zwei oder mehrere Erkrankungen gleichzeitig bestehen. Welche Störung dabei als die primäre betrachtet wird und welche als die komorbide, hängt vom eingenommenen Blickwinkel ab. In diesem Kapitel soll die affektive Störung den Ausgangspunkt darstellen. Der Begriff der Komorbidität bleibt ätiologisch neutral; berücksichtigt man jedoch zeitliche und ursächliche Zusammenhänge, sind verschiedene Konstellationen denkbar:

Die Erkrankungen bestehen unabhängig voneinander, ihr Zusammentreffen ist zufällig.

Die Depression geht der körperlichen Erkrankung zeitlich voraus, begünstigt oder verursacht diese.

3.
Die Depression tritt zeitlich nach oder ursächlich infolge einer körperlichen Erkrankung auf.
