Zusammenfassung
Traditionell werden die Hernien der Inguinalregion in direkte und indirekte Leistenhernien sowie Schenkelhernien eingeteilt. Parallel mit der Einführung neuer bzw. der Modifikation lange bekannter Operationsmethoden wurden Anstrengungen unternommen, das für einen bestimmten Hernientyp günstigste Reparationsverfahren zu identifizieren. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurden eine Reihe von Klassifikationen vorgeschlagen, von denen sich jedoch keine generell durchsetzen konnte. Die derzeit am häufigsten diskutierten Klassifikationssysteme stammen von Gilbert, Nyhus, Bendavid und Schumpelick.
