Zahnärztliche Therapie im Alter – Wann ist was indiziert?

Zusammenfassung

In den vergangenen Jahren hat sich die Mundgesundheit von Senioren verbessert; immer mehr Senioren erhalten ihre natürlichen Zähne bis ins hohe Lebensalter. Dennoch ist die Prävalenz oraler Erkrankungen bei Senioren sehr hoch und ein ernst zu nehmendes Problem. Eine gute Mundgesundheit ist insbesondere für Senioren relevant, da diese die Kaufunktion, den Ernährungszustand und die allgemeine Zufriedenheit beeinflusst. Zudem stehen Erkrankungen der Mundhöhle in Wechselwirkungen mit der allgemeinen Gesundheit. Der aktuelle Beitrag gibt einen evidenzbasierten Überblick über die Mundgesundheit von Senioren und beleuchtet wichtige Zusammenhänge (Ernährungsstatus, mundgesundheitsbezogene Lebensqualität und Gesundheit i. Allg.). Es werden Hinweise gegeben, wann eine zahnärztliche Behandlung indiziert sein kann. Dabei unterstützende Untersuchungsinstrumente zur Einschätzung der Mundgesundheit, der Kaufunktion und der mundgesundheitsbezogenen Lebensqualität werden vorgestellt und erläutert.
