Schlaf und Schlafstörungen im hohen Lebensalter

Zusammenfassung

Mit dem Alter zunehmende Unterbrechungen des Nachtschlafs müssen von den eigentlichen Schlafstörungen unterschieden werden. Morbidität und Medikation beeinflussen den Schlaf. Die Beziehung zwischen Schlaf und Morbidität ist bidirektional. Gestörter Schlaf modifiziert viele Krankheitsbilder, und Krankheiten beeinflussen Schlaf und Schlafvermögen. Geriatrische Syndrome wie Sturz, Depression oder Demenz werden durch Schlafstörungen in ihrem Erscheinungsbild verändert. Durch die Therapie von Schlafstörungen können geriatrische Syndrome günstig beeinflusst werden. Im Vorfeld ist die ausreichende Diagnostik wichtig. Koinzidenzen verschiedener Schlafstörungen sind häufig. Anamnese und ein Schlaftagebuch sind die Grundlagen der Diagnostik. Die Schlafmedizin stellt weitere technische Untersuchungsverfahren zur Verfügung. Ältere Menschen sollten in einem Schlaflabor untersucht werden, wenn die Ergebnisse Konsequenzen haben, die von den Patienten akzeptiert werden. Dies ist im Vorfeld abzuklären.
