Die Sarkopenie, der fortgeschrittene altersassoziierte Abbau von Muskelmasse und Muskelkraft bzw. -funktion [1], hat nun seit dem 1. Oktober 2016 ihren eigenen ICD-10-CM-Code. Er lautet M62.84 [2]. Dieser Umstand dürfte zu einer deutlichen Aufwertung dieses geriatrischen Syndroms innerhalb des Gesundheitswesens führen, da zukünftig mit der Erstattungsfähigkeit einer standardisierten Sarkopeniediagnostik und -therapie gerechnet werden kann. Diese bedürfen allerdings noch einer weitergehenden Präzisierung. Grundsätzlich dürfte sich das klinische Prozedere im Kontext einer Sarkopenie analog zu dem bei anderen geriatrischen Syndromen üblichen entwickeln. Nach dem Screening erfolgt die primäre Diagnose einschließlich des Versuchs einer ätiologischen Zuordnung (u. a. primäre vs. sekundäre Sarkopenie), an die sich die Festlegung des therapeutischen Vorgehens anschließt. Hinsichtlich des Letzteren stellt sich die Frage, ob in den nächsten Jahren ergänzend zu den etablierten Ansätzen im Bereich von Training und Ernährung Therapieinnovationen erwartet werden können. …
