Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen werden von vielen als schicksalhafte Konsequenz der veränderten Altersstruktur der Gesellschaft gesehen, die zu dem Preis gehören, den wir für unsere gestiegene Lebenserwartung zahlen müssen. Wenngleich diese Annahme im Kern nicht zu bestreiten ist, haben jedoch einige Erkenntnisse der letzten 20 Jahre gezeigt, dass sie zumindest modifiziert werden muss.
