Zusammenfassung

In drei Abschnitten dieses Kapitels wird auf wichtige medizinische Folgen von Dysphagien eingegangen, nämlich auf – besonders ältere Menschen bedrohende – Malnutrition und Dehydration sowie auf Aspirationspneumonie, die häufigste mittelbare Todesursache dysphagischer Personen. Neben Begriffsdefinitionen erfolgt jeweils eine detaillierte Beschreibung diagnostischer Möglichkeiten und wirksamer therapeutischer bzw. prophylaktischer Interventionen. Der letzte Abschnitt widmet sich Faktoren, die bislang noch nicht so gut untersucht sind; dabei werden insbesondere dysphagiebedingte Einschränkungen der Lebensqualität und Kosten für das Gesundheitssystem behandelt.
