ABSTRACT

The prevalence and complexity of mental disorders in children and adolescents necessitates multimodal treatment concepts and adjuvant therapeutic approaches. This chapter presents arguments on the clinical-therapeutic potential and explores scientific evidence from recent research on the effectiveness of singing in this patient group. The many effects of singing, along with music’s power to activate changes in the core structures of affective, reward and creative processing in the brain, can be applied to improve treatment of mental illnesses in young patients. At this time, there is a need for further research in clinical and educational settings to confirm the evidence-based practice.
