Aufgrund der wachsenden klinischen Erfahrung mit der therapeutischen Hypothermie wird dieses Verfahren bei verschiedenen Erkrankungen eingesetzt. Obwohl es in den Leitlinien für einige Indikationen explizit empfohlen wird, hat sich der routinemäßige Einsatz jedoch noch nicht allgemein durchgesetzt.

Die therapeutische Hypothermie ist relativ nebenwirkungsarm durchführbar, wenn auf eine strikte Kontrolle der Vitalparameter, Elektrolyte und des Blutzuckers geachtet wird. Während die Anwendung für erwachsene Patienten nach erfolgreicher prähospitaler Reanimation und für die Neugeborenen-Hypoxie gesichert ist, fehlt derzeit für alle anderen potenziellen Indikationen eine gesicherte Datenlage.
