The history and organization of interdisciplinary geriatric assessment teams are described. Interdisciplinary collaboration is essential in order to complete a thorough biopsychosocial assessment of geriatric patients. Whether a geriatrician functions in an inpatient team setting or develops a private practice in the community, coordinated longterm care of older persons demands the appreciation and understanding of the roles of other disciplines, coupled with interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with the patient and other professionals. A major tenet is that successful teamwork occurs in day-to-day patient care, not only during interdisciplinary team meetings. By participating in interdisciplinary teams during training, geriatricians can acquire the attitudes and skills necessary to evaluate and treat elderly patients within a broad medical, professional, and socioeconomic context.
