Dependence of visual and cognitive outcomes on animal holder configuration in a rodent model of blast overpressure exposure
2021, Vision ResearchCitation Excerpt :Blast-related injuries are studied in mice and rats due to their low cost, ease of genetic manipulation, and well-mapped genomes (Cernak, 2005). Blast experiments conducted using rats and mice have included free-field explosions (Hines-Beard et al., Jun 2012; Kuehn et al., 2011; Zou et al., 2013), shock tubes (DeMar et al., 2016; Petras et al., 1997), and modified devices such as a nail gun (Kuehn et al., 2011) and a paintball gun (Bricker-Anthony et al., 2014; Bricker-Anthony et al., 2016). In these blast models, peak overpressures and durations are documented in an effort to ensure that experimental design produces blast exposure conditions comparable to those experienced by military personnel (Courtney and Courtney, 2015; Goldstein et al., 2014).
Blast mild traumatic brain injury is associated with increased myopia and chronic convergence insufficiency
2021, Vision ResearchCitation Excerpt :Blast TBI is generally associated with both diffuse axonal injury due to shearing forces that can damage long-range nerve fiber tracts at the time of injury (Davenport, Lim, Armstrong, & Sponheim, 2012; Magnuson, Leonessa, & Ling, 2012) as well as progressive neuronal degeneration due to neuroinflammatory responses that continue post-injury (Lozano et al., 2015). Concerning the visual system, these pathological changes can impact visual functioning in the absence of ocular injury by damaging the retina, optic nerve, and the cranial nerves that underly oculomotor functioning, as well as the cortical and subcortical structures that support visual perception (Allen et al., 2018; DeWalt & Eldred, 2017; Dutca et al., 2014; Kelts, 2010; Petras, Bauman, & Elsayed, 1997). Recent work in animal models has shown chronic deficits in contrast sensitivity and spatial frequency sensitivity in rats months after exposure to a single acoustic blast (Allen et al., 2018).
Traumatic retinal detachment-the difficulty and importance of correct diagnosis
2016, Survey of OphthalmologyCitation Excerpt :Tiny breaks near the ora serrata may be caused by trauma to the zonule with traction on aberrant zonular fibers that insert into peripheral retina posterior to the ora serrata.2,15,29 Chorioretinal necrosis caused by injury from the shock wave of a high-velocity missile passing next to the eye, retinitis sclopetaria, may also cause full thickness retinal defects leading to TrRD.37,40,59 While almost all traumatic retinal breaks occur at the time of the trauma, subsequent TrRD usually occurs after a delay of months to years.4,11,16,26,31,33,45,54,61
