2016, Blood Cells, Molecules, and DiseasesCitation Excerpt :RBC aggregation is the major determinant of blood viscosity under low local shear conditions due to the increased effective particle size of aggregates which results in significant flow disturbances [28] and pronounced blood viscosity. Both RBC aggregation and deformability can affect blood flow in smaller blood vessels and in the microcirculation [25,26,29,30]. Interestingly, RBC aggregation is present in athletic, but not in sedentary species, implying a positive, beneficial role of aggregation.
