The first ERC guidelines were presented in Brighton in 1992 and covered basic2 and advanced life support.3 In 1994, Guidelines for Paediatric Life Support (PLS)4 and Guidelines for the Management of Peri-arrest Arrhythmias5 followed at the second Congress in Mainz, with Guidelines for the Basic and Advanced Management of the Airway and Ventilation during Resuscitation at the third Congress in Seville in 1996,6 and updated Guidelines at the 4th Scientific Congress of the ERC in Copenhagen in 1998.7,8 In 2000, international guidelines were produced in collaboration with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR)9 which the ERC went on to summarise in 2001.10

Finally, international guidelines need to acknowledge the variation in national and local emergency medical infrastructures and allow flexibility when necessary. The European Resuscitation Council (ERC) published guidelines for paediatric life support (PLS) in 1994, 1998, 2000, 2005 and 2010.1–5 The latter three were based on the paediatric work of the International Consensus on Science published by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR).6–10

      2007, Resuscitation
      Citation Excerpt :

The most recent guidelines from the United States regarding withholding or termination of resuscitation in pre-hospital traumatic cardiopulmonary arrest should not be applied to children because supporting evidence is lacking.2 Throughout the 10-year study period, paediatric advanced life support undertaken by London HEMS personnel complied with the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) guidelines.25–27 The latest edition of the ERC guidelines has included a simple algorithm for paediatric basic life support which is directed at healthcare professionals.28
