Abstract
Compared to the changes in the guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation of the years 2000 and 2005, modifications in the 2010 guidelines are modest. There are, however, more precise details, specifically regarding qualitiy of basic life support and chest compressions which are of utmost importance for survival. Questions with respect to energy and discharge characteristics of defibrillation have still not been answered. In contrast feedback systems integrated in modern defibrillators may add essentially to improve performance in basic life support techniques. The role of vasopressors and antiarrhythmics remains unclear. The outstanding value of therapeutic hypothermia in post-resuscitation care is underlined, and the importance of reperfusion for patients with arrest due to coronary heart disease has been added. With respect to the initial procedures in acute coronary syndromes the new antithrombins and antiplatelets as well as strategies to select the optimal reperfusion therapy for ST elevation myocardial infarction has been integrated in a compulsory concept. The present article intends to summarize all major changes of the new guidelines in a compact form.
