Abstract

In an intensive care unit, members of many professions, especially physicians and nurses, must collaborate closely in order to react flexibly in response to various medical and organizational problems and to provide a high quality of medical care. Following the principle of self-organization, the team members have to communicate with each other, coordinate their actions, and make decisions. An important precondition for a trustful and open communication is that the members of the different professions respect each other regarding their role-specific skills. An important task for the leaders of the intensive care unit is to provide the structural requirements for such a self-organization and communication and to make sure that all team members can acquire all the skills needed to do a safe job.
