Zusammenfassung
Schlafen und Wachen sind Verhaltenszustände, die sowohl bezüglich ihrer Regulation als auch hinsichtlich ihrer Funktion sehr eng miteinander verzahnt sind. Obwohl die Funktionen des Schlafs nach wie vor nicht vollständig bekannt sind, besteht keinerlei Zweifel daran, dass qualitativ und quantitativ ausreichender Schlaf eine Conditio sine qua non für eine adäquate Funktion des Zentralnervensystems im Wachzustand darstellt. Umgekehrt hängen Quantität und Qualität des nächtlichen Schlafes einerseits von der Dauer des vorausgehenden Wachseins ab, andererseits aber auch von der Aktivität im Wachen. Umfang und Ausmaß der motorischen und mentalen Aktivität im Wachen, von Stressoren und Ruhe-Episoden haben nicht nur wesentlichen Einfluss auf den Einschlafprozess, sondern auch auf die Schlafarchitektur.
