Der demografische Strukturwandel moderner Gesellschaften lässt sich besonders deutlich in Europa beobachten (z.B. Grundy 1996; Billari/Kohler 2004). Als Folge dauerhaft niedriger Geburtenziffern und einer stetig steigenden Lebenserwartung findet ein gesellschaftlicher Alterungsprozess statt, dessen Konsequenzen Staat und Wirtschaft ebenso wie Familie und Individuum vor erhebliche Herausforderungen stellen. Entsprechend steht der demografische Wandel mit Schlagworten wie ‚Vergreist die Republik?’ oder ‚Sterben die Deutschen aus?’ in einer Reihe mit anderen gesellschaftlichen Krisendebatten des ausgehenden 20. und beginnenden 21. Jahrhunderts, wie jenen über das ‚Ende der Arbeitsgesellschaft’ oder die ‚Klimakatastrophe’.
