Zusammenfassung

Das deutsche Wort ›Semiotik‹ (gr. sēmeiōtikḗ epistḗmē) bezeichnet die Wissenschaft (epistḗmē) vom Zeichen (sēmeíon bzw. sḗma). Zeichen sind Gegenstände, die auf etwas (eine Botschaft) verweisen (vgl. Jakobson 1975); sie setzen voraus, dass es jemanden gibt, der sie versteht (einen Interpreten). Die Prozesse, in denen Zeichen und Interpreten auftreten, heißen »Zeichenprozesse« (»Semiosen«; vgl. Morris 1972, S. 20; Deely 1990, S. 32; Koch 1998, S. 707–719). Eine Menge von Interpreten zusammen mit den von ihnen interpretierten Zeichen und Botschaften sowie den für die Interpretation relevanten weiteren Umständen (vgl. Prieto 1972, S. 48 f.) nennt man ›Zeichensystem‹. Die Semiotik untersucht also Zeichen im Hinblick auf ihr Funktionieren in Zeichenprozessen im Rahmen von Zeichensystemen.
