Zusammenfassung

Angesichts des enormen Anstiegs der durchschnittlichen Lebenserwartung in den hochentwickelten Ländern beschäftigen sich zusehends mehr wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen mit der Frage, in welchem gesundheitlichen Zustand die hinzugewonnenen Lebensjahre verbracht werden können. Diese Frage ist auch sozial- und gesundheitspolitisch relevant, da die soziale Sicherung und gesundheitliche Versorgung im höheren Lebensalter eine der zentralen Herausforderungen moderner Gesellschaften darstellt und bereits heute ein Großteil der Sozialausgaben für die Gesundheit älterer Menschen aufgewendet wird (vgl. Guillemard 1994). In naher Zukunft wird sich an diesem Tatbestand voraussichtlich nur wenig ändern, zumal im Zuge der ansteigenden durchschnittlichen Lebenserwartung nicht nur die Zahl alter und sehr alter Menschen zunimmt, sondern zugleich der Anteil der Älteren an der Gesamtbevölkerung wächst (vgl. Dinkel 1994).
