61. Arenaviren

Zusammenfassung

Arenaviren tragen ein segmentiertes RNA-Genom, das Leserahmen mit beiden Polaritäten enthält (Ambisense-Kodierungsstrategie). Die Viren werden von Nagetieren auf den Menschen übertragen und können schwere Erkrankungen auslösen. Das Lassa-Virus und weitere afrikanische und südamerikanische Arenaviren verursachen hämorrhagische Fieber mit zum Teil tödlichem Verlauf. Das Lymphozytäre Choriomeningitisvirus (LCMV) kommt weltweit vor und kann bei immunkompetenten Personen eine aseptische Meningitis auslösen. Nach LCMV-Übertragung auf immunsupprimierte Patienten kommt es zu tödlichen Verläufen, die kongenitale Infektion kann zu Fehlbildungen des fetalen Gehirns führen. LCMV ist außerdem ein wichtiges Modellpathogen für immunologische Studien.
